Hi

I was hoping I could pick some of your brains here please..

I have an online timesheet business (I wont mention the name as I'm probably not allowed to advertise here..) and basically I am thinking of trying to get into the construction market, but I am trying to work out if there is a need and what sort of features such a system would require. I think the biggest differentiator in the construction industry is that almost all workers are not sat in front of a PC all day, so an electronic timesheet becomes a bit complicated. But then again, almost everyone these days has a PC at home? My system does support mobile phone browsers, it has specific cut-down pages which are easy to navigate on small screens, so this is one of dealing with that problem - most people have internet on their phones as well. The last resort, which I havent fully implemented is text messaging - EVERYONE can text. The only complication is that to text a timesheet, it needs to be in a specific format, which is not exactly rocket science anyway, but the worker would still need to know their unique task codes for which they are submitting time for, otherwise the timesheet cant export these unique task codes when exporting weekly timesheet data.

What I was hoping to find out from people is if you guys think there is a demand, and if it worked in the way I have described you think it provide value to construction businesses. Or if you don't think it would work, is there some way it could work?  Any other ideas would also be appreciated.

Many thanks

Welcome Michael

You can post your website here http://constructionforums.co.uk/index.php?board=13.0

To answer your question, many years ago I had a Construction business that used time sheets and even a time clock, back in those days if I had a way of doing all this electronically I would have jumped at the chance of it. The bane of my life was quantifying time sheets every week and allocating hours to certain jobs etc.

The initial problem I see is that many construction workers are out on site and don't have access to a pc, some cannot even use a pc still, but you will get that in other industries too, so you just need to tackle that part of the problem and I am sure the rest will fall into place.

Welcome onto the board Michael.  Certainly time sheets could be linked in with the security features that a lot of the major sites have now.  You will have probably seen the swipe card turnstiles.  Have you got an online demo that I could have a look at?

Hi guys

Thanks for both your responses. Glad to hear that it sounds like there is a demand for electronic timesheets in construction, and linking in with swipe card turnstiles does sound like a good idea. Are swipe card turnstiles quite popular in construction? Presumably this would be for a very largfe projects only, and not for the smaller ones?

If you do want to try out a demo fo the system, go to www.timesheetportal.com and click on the free trial button. Thanks for the link to the other forum where I can post a link to the software as well.

Cheers
